Although increasingly appreciated in fine art and stamp collecting circles, artist postage stamps, or artistamps, are more likely to be traded between the people who create them than they are to be exhibited in commercial art galleries or read about in philatelic journals. Artistamps are part and parcel of the grassroots network known as Mail Art, an alternative art of creative long-distance communication that intuited the demand for cross-cultural exchange long before the Internet. TAM-Bulletin - 1985

In the 80-ies I issued the TAM-Bulletin. A Mail-Art magazine that was sent out with lots of Mail-Art information about the network. Some copies now pop up on the Internet. Here is a sample from 1985, sent to Mr. Zan in the USA. :


He scanned it with the little note I added to it and published in on facebook. All originals of the TAM-Bulletin are still in the TAM-Archive. These pages were all typed on a typewriter. The pre-computer days were so much fun but also labour intensive....

B&W Version of Statements Collection on Mail-Art by Ruud Janssen. Reprint of statements written in period 1993-2008 on the subject of mail-art. These statements were first published as pamphlets. Later on the Internet, and now as a collection in one book. Some statements and texts were also published on the Internet first and later as print-out sent into the network. The last part of this book contains visual statements made when the Millennium came about and most recent is an overview of the slides used at a lecture at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam explaining the concept of mail-art. In the past 28 years Ruud Janssen has intensively written about how E-mail and Internet would change mail-art, and it has.

Mail Art Archives

An article about mail-Art archives I wrote back in the 90-ies. It dealt with how people then were building up their mail-art archives. Nowadays we are 20 years further. Some mail-artists have donated (or sold) their collections to archives, but some collections have vanished. It always is an interesting topic. Maybe should explore this a bit more in the near future.
